"Two Ways of Viewing the River"
0 comments Published Wednesday, June 2, 2010 by Tiffany Bennett inIn this selection called “Two Ways of Viewing the River” from Samuel Clemens book, Life on the Mississippi, he describes how someone’s view of something can change so drastically from over exposure to it, like in this case a river he steam boated on. Clemens explains how in the first few times of experiencing this river, he only thinks about “the grace, the beauty, and the poetry” he sees. How everything he passes is so filled with colors and beautiful images. But after many times of steam boating down this same river, his views of things change. Now as he passes these once beautiful images, he sees warning signs of things to come. Everything he sees makes him say “that means, and this means...” Clemens states how all “the romance and beauty were gone from the river”. He compares this instance to that of a doctor. Does a doctor not see the beauty in someone, but only the prospect of sickness and disease? Clemens makes a good point and makes us take a look into ourselves, and our view of things.
Intro to "An Inventory of Being"
0 comments Published by Tiffany Bennett inThe last piece I chose is my “Writer’s Choice”. It was the very first assignment we had in this class for the quarter, an Inventory of Being. We had to write a poem type piece that explained ourselves and our likes, dislikes, loves, hates, wishes, and goals in an imaginative way. Before starting this assignment I was honestly scared. It was the first week of English, I have this assignment due, and I’ve never been good at expressing myself. But as I was writing it, I started to have fun. I realized it was fun to be able to express and explain “me” in a creative way. The strength of this piece was my creativeness. I have always said that I was born without an imagination, but I defied that with this piece. My favorite lines that I wrote were- “My husband is my best friend and my companion for life. My son is special, amazing, and lives in his own world. My daughter is walking through beautiful fields, holding hands with Jesus”. This assignment gave me confidence in continuing to write throughout the quarter. I still get chills when reading it, and I hope you enjoy it just as much…

I am 5’3, but sometimes feel 3 feet tall.
I have hazel eyes, but most people will argue that fact.
I have a precious life growing inside of me, who I am dying to meet, who wants to meet me just as much, I hope.
I love the smell of clean laundry on a sunny day. I love standing next to a pool and smelling the chlorine.
Family is everything to me at this point in my life. My husband is my best friend and my companion for life.
My son is special, amazing, and lives in his own world.
My daughter is walking through beautiful fields, holding hands with Jesus.
I like to sing, but only in private. I like to dance when I’m home alone.
I love how green and cute frogs are.
I hope for long, fulfilling lives of my children.
I believe my daughter feels no pain, and lives in eternal happiness.
I know how to manage restaurants and video stores, although I don’t understand why I did for so long.
My sister is amazing, and my role model for life.
I admire anyone who has lost a child, and continues to fight the fight of life.
I don’t like people who insist to come to a complete stop before turning.
I can’t live without sunny afternoons. I can’t live without hope for the future of my kids.
I need to create happy memories with my family; therefore I spend too much money on outings.
If I won the lottery I would live comfortably, support my family, and invest in our future.
I wish life were easy. I wish for joy in everyone’s life.
I am too serious at times, but wish not to be. I am a loyal friend and expect loyalty in return. I am sarcastic, but my husband does not enjoy that trait.
I am studying for a computer science degree.
I hope to make the rest of my life successful.
I dislike hypocrisy, but am guilty of it at times.
I like to be in charge, but often am too shy.
